It would be hard to find a more passionate food lover than Steven. As the founder and owner of Liberty Heights Fresh, Steven has been supplying organic, local, artisanal food to Utah since 1993. Like many of you, I have been shopping at Liberty Heights Fresh for many years, and before that I shopped there with my mom. I recently got to know Steven as a friend through my work at Caffe Niche, and he was happy to help me with my blog.
It was a hot summer afternoon when I walked to Liberty Heights Fresh to interview Steven. We sat outside at his patio table. As we discussed all the food topics, Steven commonly engaged the passing customers. He made sure they had a good shopping experience and enjoyed the food they purchased. Many of them were regulars. As he chatted with everyone, Steven’s enthusiasm for food was contagious.
Steven’s passion comes from his strong beliefs in food integrity, in food community, and in real ingredients that taste good. He has been called a foodevangelist, and he was recently awarded the Community Service Award from Salt Lake magazine for his food activism and for his support to local businesses.
Growing up on a farm, Steven was always around fresh food, and food became important to him at a young age. He started his career at a large grocery distribution company that served rural communities of Michigan. From this experience Steven said that he learned how not to do business and how not to treat customers. When he opened Liberty Heights Fresh, he not only wanted to serve good food, but he wanted to create a great place to work. Steven’s family life moved to Salt Lake where he fatefully opened his own store. The location for the store was originally indented to open as a Dominion’s Pizza; however the owner sold it to Steven instead
All aspects of running his store excite Steven. The quality of his products is very important. He makes no compromises when it comes to serving good food. Steven believes, “Cheap food is poison; there is a connection between food and heath, and we need to take ownership of what we eat.” Steven is thoughtful and considerate when choosing products. He develops good relationships and supports local producers and businesses. Steven enjoys befriending people who make good food, and these are some of his favorites products:
• Amore Spreads
• Blue Copper Coffee
• Pop Art Snacks
• Rock Hill Cheese
• Solstice Chocolate
Steven has a great team working with him at the store. They are smart, informed, and caring employees. One told me that working for Steven was “awesome.” Steven’s two sons, Noah and Tabias, also work and have worked at the store, while attending school. Steven is proud of his sons’ accomplishments and their professionalism with customers. Liberty Heights Fresh is currently cooking up a great selection of prepared foods with their fresh ingredients. Their salads, hummus, and sandwiches are some of my favorite things to grab for a tasty, healthy meal.
Liberty Height Fresh has been a great resource for the Salt Lake community for over twenty years. Steven’s belief in food integrity benefits all his customers. He knows that food provides both emotional and physical health, so it is important to take care in what you eat. Steven’s advice to shoppers is to become more farm to table and sustainable. It is important for personal health and the health of our environment, and it is an investment in the future health.
